WALT Books

At a recent cluster meeting we discussed ways of displaying, and more importantly, referring to, our Learning Intentions and Success Criteria.

Whilst many of our classrooms have them, they are at risk of being covered up and are often rubbed off our whiteboards after the unit has finished which makes referring back very difficult for our students.  Renee was able to come to our rescue with the aid of her WALT (What are we learning today) books, and has provided this post to tell us more about them.

An A3 portfolio book is used to document the learning that occurs in my classroom for literacy and numeracy.  I type up my learning intentions and success criteria’s for each lesson (or when I remember) and paste them in the book.

I then will use photographs or work samples as evidence of the learning being done to support the learning intention and success criteria.  I will then revisit the WALT book with my students during a mini lesson to create links about prior learning.

The WALT books are a great way to document your teaching as well as student learning.  It’s a great resource to have to create links to previous lessons, share ideas and strategies, bring absent students up to date, discuss learning with parents, but most importantly, it keeps you on track.
